Wal-Mart ABSTRACT
This report addresses the two main problems at Wal-Mart, which have impacted its reputation in recent years. Both of these problems are violations against law: hiring illegal workers and sex-discrimination. Wal-Mart committed these violations mainly because, like so many other businesses, it is trying to compete by maintaining low prices. Obvious issues like hiring illegal workers or sex-discrimination are important legal issues in the U.S. These problems need intensive supervision to avoid any further costly neglect. This report also provides the documentation and history of each problem.

Organizational theories to solving these problems are (1) the equity theory, and (2) the deprivation theories of organizational justice. Recommendations based on these theories are offered to provide both employees and the employer with possible solutions to change their workplace culture, and to fight against the negative publicity.

Preface

Today’s global market has created so many opportunities for large corporations to expand and grow. Challenges are great and very complicated as a company goes beyond its national borders. Adapting to new cultures and values in different corners of the world is not an easy task. Any company may get lost by expanding faster than it can truly handle. Those employees and customers who were the backbone of the business may feel abandoned or even betrayed by management. Wal-Mart is one good example in this area.

Wal-Mart enjoyed great success inside the US, and used the capital it earned to expand internationally. Today, while it is the world’s largest retailer, it is also suffering a huge image problem mainly because of the loss of its identity, which it was founded on, somewhere beyond the borders of its birthplace. For example, “Respecting the Individual” does not have that much meaning when you do business in China.

In this report, two of the many problems facing Wal-Mart are discussed: hiring illegal workers and sex discrimination. However, the Achilles heel of all Wal-Mart problems in my view is its struggle with commitment to be the retailer to maintain the absolute lowest prices. In its pursuit of this policy, Wal-Mart has and continues to disregard the quality of service to its customers and the quality of work environments for its employees. At the end of the report some solutions are also offered.
