Please read Donald Murray’s “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts.” Perhaps you don’t think of your essays as “manuscripts,” which makes them sound pretty fancy, but that’s in fact what they are.
As you read Murray, think about your past experiences with revising. To what extent were you expected/encouraged/required to revise your written texts in the past? Were you expected to truly revise, as Murray describes it here, or were you really only expected to “correct”?
